I, Gisele Alexandre, am a research engineer in animal husbandry and tropical farming systems. I’ve studied creole small ruminants (mainly Creole goats) using different scales (animal, flock and paddock, farming system, product, food chain). Diverse disciplines are integrated in my scientific approach: reproduction control, pasture management, feeding strategies and meat quality. I’ve studied and analyzed the diversity, the productivity and the territorial and societal functions of livestock. Moreover, I’ve performed many missions of education (academic and vocational training) and I often interact with stakeholders in the French Antilles (breeder’s unions or Natural Parks) but also elsewhere in the Caribbean (Cuba, Haiti, Mexico). As a member (past member) of the International Goat Association, I’ve lead numerous expert missions in the Caribbean and Latin America. I can point that I’ve brought a critical glance at the strengths and the constraints in tropical areas. More specifically, I’ve investigated the multi-functional features of livestock farming in these territories. I’m taking part of a team project upon agroecological engineering adapted to tropical agro ecosystems. In my research unit I’m the ones allowing the holistic approach and taking into account the stakeholders points of view in our rich and large multidisciplinary program.
